South Fayette National Honor Society
Oakridge Chapter
The National Honor Society is a national organization that promotes recognition of students in the areas of scholarship, character, leadership, and service. Selection to be a member of the National Honor Society is indeed a privilege. Students do not apply for membership. If they have maintained a 3.5 unweighted cumulative grade point average from ninth grade through the current year, they have met the “Scholarship” requirement and are invited to provide information for the Executive Faculty Council to consider them for membership. Students may be inducted as sophomores, juniors, or seniors.
Students must provide evidence of “Service” through the contributions he or she has made to school, church, and community. Students are required to complete eight hours of service activities and complete signed verification forms.
The Executive Council selects the students for membership once each high school faculty member has voted for potential new members based on the remaining criteria of character and leadership.
A student of character demonstrates the following characteristics: respect, responsibility, trustworthiness, fairness, caring, and citizenship.
Leaders demonstrate the following characteristics: leadership in the classroom and other school activities, positive attitudes, and dependability in any responsibility accepted.
After meeting the scholarship criteria, students must receive a “yes” vote from at least 80% of the faculty and submit evidence of service. Students will then be sent a letter of acceptance and will be invited to join the National Honor Society. All new members will be inducted during our annual induction ceremony conducted by the National Honor Society officers. All new members receive a National Honor Society certificate and membership pin. The student’s membership in the National Honor Society, an organization recognized throughout the nation, is a public acknowledgement of accomplishment as well as a private commitment to scholarship, character, leadership, and service.
Once inducted, students maintain their membership yearly by continuing to earn a 3.5 or higher cumulative grade point average, continued community service, and upholding the high principles of character and leadership required of all NHS members.
