Community of South Fayette
Township
South Fayette Township is a rapidly developing
residential suburb located 12 miles southwest
of Pittsburgh in Allegheny County, southwestern
Pennsylvania. The township encompasses an
area of 20.95 square miles and has a population
of more than 12,800 residents.
The school district is centrally
located on a 105 acre tract of land. Campus
facilities consist of an Elementary School
(Grades K-4), Middle School (Grades 5-8),
High School (Grades 9-12), Administration
Building, Athletic Stadium, and Bus Garage.
In terms of new home developments,
South Fayette Township is the fastest growing
community in the South Hills. More than
500 new homes, townhouses, and condominiums
have been constructed since 1990. Close
proximity to the interchange of Interstate
79 has made the area a popular choice. Prospective
residents have a choice of numerous new
home developments including a prestigious
golf club community. With only one-third
of the land in the township developed, the
potential for additional development is
excellent.

Organization and
Staff
In 2004-2005, enrollment for students in
Grades K-12 totals over 1,900 students.
Currently the staff includes 206 professional
and 57 support service personnel.
The educational policies
of South Fayette Township School District
are set by a nine-member board of school
directors who are elected to serve a four
year term. There are eight administrators
directing school operations: a superintendent;
an assistant superintendent of curriculum,
instruction and assessment; director of
pupil personnel; elementary, middle and
high school principals; a school psychologist;
and a director of finance and business operation.

Curriculum
A comprehensive and articulated curriculum
is provided for grades K-12 that meets the
needs of all students. In addition, individualized
programs are provided for the handicapped.
The needs of these students are met by special
education specialists, guidance personnel,
a school psychologist, and three nurses.
A continuous program for gifted students
is also available. In their junior and senior
years, students who qualify are given the
opportunity to earn college credit by taking
Advanced Placement classes in the Honors
Academy at South Fayette.
Student Activities
South Fayette Township School District offers
a full menu of extracurricular and athletic
activities for our students. Participation
in these programs is encouraged for all
students who qualify academically. Activities
available include participation the drama
club, chorus and band, performing venues
such as plays and musicals, yearbook and
newspaper staffs, foreign language clubs,
a health careers club, multi-cultural club,
and a club called “Lion Hearts”
that is dedicated to community service.
South Fayette’s school colors are
green and white and our mascot is the mighty
Lion.
Support Services
The district owns and operates a fleet of
36 buses and vans, employing 31 part-year
regular employees, including a full-time
mechanic and assistant mechanic, and four
substitute drivers. Approximately 2,100
students are transported daily by the district.
This includes transporting almost 300 students
to 19 private, parochial, and special schools
within a ten-mile radius. The district also
contracts with other carriers to transport
South Fayette students to 12 special schools
throughout the Pittsburgh area.
The lunch program at South
Fayette Township School District meets the
criteria set by the National School Lunch
Program and provides students with a well-balanced,
nutritious lunch that complies with guidelines
set by the program daily. A la carte foods
and a salad bar are also available for purchase.
The High School and Middle School also features
food courts that offers students a greater
variety of lunch choices. The High School
also offers a snack bar for students who
participate in after school activities.
District Facilities are
maintained by a Director of Maintenance
and a staff of 22 custodial and maintenance
personnel. The district employs 16 full-time
administrative employees including a superintendent’s
assistant, attendance clerk, assistant for
transportation, and accounts payable clerk.
Finances
The 2005-2006 operating budget totals $26.4
million. The current millage
for the 2005-2006 school year is 20.29 mills.
